Provincial Insolvency Act, 1920
ACT NO. 5 OF 1920

Act Objective:
An Act to consolidate and amend the Law relating to Insolvency as administered by Courts having jurisdiction outside the Presidency-towns. WHEREAS it is expedient to consolidate and amend the law relating to insolvency as administered by Courts having jurisdiction outside the Presidency-towns; It is hereby enacted as follows:--
1. Short title and extent.-
(1) This Act may be called the Provincial Insolvency Act, 1920.
(2) It extends to the whole of India except the territories which, immediately before the 1st November, 1956, were comprised in Part B States and the Scheduled Districts.
2. Definitions.-
(1) In this Act, unless there is anything repugnant in the subject or context,-
(a) "creditor" includes a decree-holder, "debt" includes a judgment-debt, and "debtor" includes a judgment-debtor;
(b) "District Court" means the principal Civil Court of original jurisdiction in any area outside the local limits for the time being of the Presidency-towns;
